CNN Money: "Raising a child just got $8,000 more expensive. Middle-income families with a child born in 2011 can expect to spend $235,000 over 17 years, according to a new report by the United States Department of Agriculture. On May 22, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson delivers the commencement address at the University of Michigan. In the speech, he lays out the goals of “The Great Society” social reforms, which include eliminating poverty and racial injustice, improving education and healthcare, and promoting urban renewal. These reforms will lead to the passage of four Civil Rights Acts, the creation of Upward Bound and Head Start, the implementation of Medicare and Medicaid, and several other programs.
