On May 26, 1869, Boston University is chartered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Today, BU has more than more than 4,000 faculty members and 32,000 students. One of the largest private universities in the US and one of Boston's largest employers, BU’s faculty and alumni include six Nobel Prize winners, including Martin Luther King, Jr.
